Why do Pets develop tear stains?
Red tear stains result from an imbalance in porphyrin metabolism. If a pet's liver is compromised, it can result in bile stasis, allowing iron porphyrin to infiltrate the blood, tears, and saliva. When these iron-enriched tears linger on fur, they oxidize and create deep red stains.
