DL-Methionine is a synthetic, racemic mixture of the essential amino acid methionine, containing both the D- and L-isomers. It appears as a white crystalline powder with a characteristic sulfurous odor. While only the L-form is biologically active in protein synthesis, animals (particularly poultry and swine) possess the metabolic ability to convert the D-form to the L-form.
